Mohini Temple - Bhubaneswar

Mohini Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, located in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha state, India. The temple is located on the southern bank of the Bindu Sagar tank. It is one of the popular Shakti temples of Bhubaneswar. The deity presiding over this temple is the ten-armed Chamundi Devi. The architecture of the temple is similar to the Parashurameshwar temple.

History

Queen Mohini Devi of Bhauma King Shivakara Deva II built the temple in her name on the southern bank of Bindu Sarovar in 687 CE.

Mohini Temple is a small temple located on the southern bank of Bindu Sagar. The architecture of the temple is similar to the Parashurameshwar temple. The temple has a sanctum sanctorum and Jagmohan. Jagmohan was completely damaged and the interior was badly rebuilt with stone. The temple plan has a Tri Ratha and a Tri Anga Bada in height.

Hardly any design or decoration is found on the Vimana or exterior walls. The sanctum sanctorum has Punavasu type of Vimana and Jagmohan Pidda type. The tower rises to a height of about 9.45 meters above the sanctum sanctorum. There are ten armed Chamunda Devi in ​​the sanctuary. The image is terrifying and is depicted in tantric form with a sunken belly, wearing a garland of skulls and standing on a corpse.

The sanctum has a six-armed Mahishasuramardini statue on the floor. There are some sculptures such as the eight-armed Durga and others are found in Jagmohan. All these sculptures were found during an excavation in the surrounding places. There is a small sub-shrine without any deity located in Prakara. Here, niche images are carved on the stones of the wall.

The outer walls have five niche paintings (Parasadevata). They are shown Ganesha seated on a throne in a semiprivate posture, with his consent on Karthikeya a peacock, the goddess Parvati in two attendants and a lion, a damaged idol of Durga and a pair of damaged unknown idols where one of them has a trident. Is holding Another is holding an ax. Two large utensils are placed on either side of them.
